Chorus News

October 2021

We are delighted to announce we have appointed a new Musical Director - Chris Horn who will start working with Minerva Chorus from 11th October 2021.September 2021.  Welcome to the team Chris!

We have started back our in-person rehearsals at St John's

August 2021

We are having a break from Zoom rehearsals in August but will be back rehearsing in person at St John's Walton Back Lane in September 2021

We are looking for new members in all voice parts (Soprano to Alto 2).  Contact us for information on how to join us.

We can't wait to be singing together again after such a long period of Zoom rehearsals.

January 2020

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of chorus member Lynne Hill on 3rd January 2021.  Lynne was a much loved, talented and dedicated member of our Chorus, and past committee member.  We will miss her beautiful singing voice, her smile, and her enthusiasm for everything Minerva.  Last year Lynne requested that Anne made a new arrangement of Skye Boat Song for the chorus.  Minerva have now recorded this song and created a video of Skye Boat Song in honour of Lynne.  A donation in her memory has been made to Ashgate Hospice on behalf of Minerva.

December 2020

Congratulations to Jane Ide - our founding member and the first Chair of Minerva who has been awarded an OBE for services to volunteering and charity  in the New Year Honours List 2021

The honour recognises Jane’s work in the voluntary sector as CEO of NAVCA (the National Association for Voluntary and Community Action).  Minerva Chorus would like to offer our congratulations to Jane for this well-deserved recognition of her work with the voluntary sector, in particular co-ordinating the charity sector's response following the Grenfell disaster and more recently the Covid-19 pandemic.  Forming Minerva Chorus wasn't mentioned in the award but if they had known about it she would have got an honour for that too!

October 2020 Covid-19 update

At present Minerva Chorus are rehearsing on Zoom only and are not performing in concerts.

We are working on a solution to singing live together in the safest way possible wearing face shields, and standing 2m apart, as soon as South Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire are in a lower tier.

We are still meeting up every week on Zoom singing on mute and learning new material for when we are able to sing together again.

September 2020

We have made four videos during this time of COVID restrictions and are working on our fifth

May it be by Enya

Only You

Somewhere over the rainbow/Wonderful world

August 2020

Minerva Chorus celebrated their 5th Birthday with a fun evening of Singing, sharing memories, quizzing and other games - all via Zoom.

Here's to another five successful years.

June 2020

Following a request from chorus member Bec - our latest song will be Take on me by Aha - arranged for Minerva by Anne Dargue - can't wait to sing this one together!

January 2020

September 2019

Celebration and renewal - a letter from Andrew Marples

Since 1990 anyone has been able to come along and listen to a high-quality Saturday lunchtime concert in Chesterfield Library Theatre. I co-founded them to provide musical performances that were free of charge and at a time of day when transport wouldn't be an issue. All the concerts are organised voluntarily and they run solely on audience donations. No funding of any sort is received. They are well-supported with an average of 100 people coming along each week. I organise 16 concerts a year and have done this for 30 years. To celebrate this, and to ensure the series can continue well into the future, I am raising £9,000 to buy a replacement for the worn-out grand piano in the Theatre.

The piano is used in 80% all of the lunchtime concerts and is a vital community resource - many other groups use it for their events too. Over the years I estimate almost 450 Saturday lunchtime concerts have been performed of every style (classical recitals, choir concerts, jazz sessions, folk groups, orchestras, young performers platforms, etc) using over 5,000 musicians and listened to by close to 50,000 people. They are truly community events and a cultural lifeline for so many people and especially the older generation. Most of the performers are local (within 50 miles) and many have been several times, as they enjoy the experience so much. I have personally performed as pianist, singer or conductor in at least 120 concerts as well as dealing with all the administration and attending physically running every concert. The piano is the centre-piece of the concerts and we can only continue if we have a new instrument. The funds have to be raised by public donations. Please donate to this appeal and secure free music for the future - come to a concert if you are in the area and see what it's all about. Find details of the concerts in Chesterfield library or online at:

October 2019 - We are officially Guinness World Record holders!

Caroline, Sue, Linda, Anne, Lynne and Catherine took part in the Guinness World record attempt at relay singing, on 7th November at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield.

Along with 384 Sheffield schoolchildren and other local choirs we successfully set the world record for  the number of people in a singing relay (one word each person, singing four songs).

All in aid of Children in Need.

October 2019 £1,070 raised for Derbyshire Stroke Centre

Some members of Minerva Chorus and Ireland Colliery Chesterfield Brass Band  presenting a cheque for £1,070 to the Derbyshire Stroke Centre.

We are delighted to welcome new Chorus Members  Mandy, Gilly, Bec and Helen

We have added some new audio clips of our reportoire onto the About Us page here's a taster -

Somewhere over the rainbow

We are currently welcoming applications from potential new members, however successful applicants may be placed on a waiting list if we have enough people already singing in that voice part.

Please complete the form on the Contact Us page if you would like to join, or ask us anything about our chorus.
